The Jedi serve the light side of the Force and follow a code of peace and self-control. The Sith draw on the dark side, fueled by anger, fear and a hunger for power. Their lightsabers are most often blue or green for the Jedi and red for the Sith.
The first film in the saga came out in 1977, directed by George Lucas. It was later retitled Episode IV: A New Hope, because the episode numbers follow the chronological order of the story rather than the order in which the films reached theaters.
Luke's father is Anakin Skywalker, a former Jedi who became Darth Vader after turning to the dark side. The truth is revealed in The Empire Strikes Back, released in 1980, during the duel between Luke and Vader in Cloud City on the planet Bespin.
