Latitude measures the angular distance north or south of the equator, from 0° to 90°. Longitude measures the distance east or west of the Greenwich meridian, from 0° to 180°. Together, these two coordinates, given in degrees, pinpoint any location on the globe.
Most major mountain ranges form when tectonic plates collide. The Himalayas rose where the Indian plate met the Eurasian plate, and they are still slowly growing. The Alps also result from the African and Eurasian plates pushing together.
The Earth turns once in 24 hours, which is 15 degrees of longitude per hour. The globe is therefore divided into zones of about 15 degrees, each one hour apart from its neighbour. The reference zone follows the Greenwich meridian (UTC), although some countries use offsets of 30 or 45 minutes.
