Frequently asked questions about Manga & anime

What is the difference between shōnen, shōjo, seinen and josei?

These four manga categories are defined by their target audience: shōnen is aimed at young boys, shōjo at young girls, seinen at adult men and josei at adult women. Dragon Ball and Naruto, for example, are shōnen series.

Why do you read manga from right to left?

Japanese is traditionally written in columns read from top to bottom, starting on the right. A manga therefore opens at what would be the last page of a Western book, and the panels are followed from right to left. Translated editions usually keep this Japanese reading direction.

Who founded Studio Ghibli?

Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 in Japan, notably by the directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. It is behind animated films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
