Words to remember

A memory test: read a list of words, then type from memory the ones you remember.

List size

You read 8 words for 20 seconds, then type from memory all the ones you remember, in any order.

To remember numbers rather than words: the digit span game on Calculer de tête (in French).

A free recall test: how many words do you remember?

Words to remember is a free memory test: you read a list of 8, 12 or 16 words for 2.5 seconds per word, then type from memory all the ones you remember, in any order.

It is a free recall exercise: no clue is given, so you have to retrieve each word yourself. The game accepts plurals, ignores accents and capital letters, and tolerates a one-letter mistake on words of six letters or more. The best score for each list size is kept in your browser, with no account.

How to play

  1. Choose the list size: 8 words in 20 seconds, 12 words in 30 seconds or 16 words in 40 seconds.
  2. Read the words shown during the time allowed, or move on to typing as soon as you feel ready.
  3. Type from memory the words you remember, separated by a space, a comma or a new line.
  4. Check to see the words found, the forgotten ones and the extra words, then play again with a new list.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do I have to remember?
It depends on the list you choose: 8, 12 or 16 words, with 20, 30 or 40 seconds to read them, which is 2.5 seconds per word. Each game draws a new list at random.
Do I need an account to play?
No. The test is free and needs no account. The best score for each list size is kept in your browser, with no sign-up.
Do accents, capital letters and plurals matter?
No. Accents and capital letters are ignored, a plural is accepted and a one-letter mistake is tolerated on words of six letters or more. The order in which you type the words does not matter.
How can I remember more words?
Linking the words together with a short story or with images can help you remember more of them. These techniques, including the method of loci, are explained in our guide to memorisation techniques.
